The "Gentle Way" to Stay Safe

Judo literally means the “Gentle Way,” but its roots are in the combat arts of Jiu-jitsu While modern judo is a fun, social sport, it was built on principles designed to avert threats quickly and efficiently.

Training at our club will help to bridge the gap between sport and real-world situations. Students learn to use movement and momentum effectively, making judo an adaptable system regardless of size or strength.

What students will learn at Dragon Judo & Self Defence Club

The focus is on practical skills that are useful in everyday life:

  • The Art of Falling (Ukemi): One of the most vital skills in judo. This involves learning how to fall safely on various surfaces to prevent injury during accidents or physical encounters.
  • Space Management: Understanding how to maintain a safe distance and manage the environment when faced with a potential threat.
  • Escaping Holds: Techniques for breaking grips and escaping when someone attempts to grab or hold a person’s arms or clothing.
  • Balance and Control: Mastering movements that allow a person to remain stable while deflecting an opponent’s momentum.
  • Ground Safety: Learning how to maintain composure and safety if a situation moves to the ground, focusing on staying in control.

The benefits of training

Beyond physical techniques, consistent practice offers several key advantages:

  • Increased Confidence: Developing the ability to protect oneself naturally improves how a person carries themselves.
  • Situational Awareness: Training helps individuals recognize, avoid and de-escalate potential conflicts before they become physical.
  • Composure Under Stress: Regular practice and drills help maintain a calm mind when adrenaline levels rise.
  • Functional Fitness: Judo provides a full-body workout that enhances stamina, strength, balance, and coordination.
